1st, from Charlie Sexton's (an incredible Texas musician - songwriter, guitarist and co-frontman for the Arcangels, guitarist for Bob Dylan's band ['97-'04], and producer and contributor for a bunch of great albums - yeah folks, it's rock-n-roll) 2005 album Cruel and Gentle Things, and the song "Gospel:"

Benevolence and BBQ Shrimp!

This is a "re-posting" from 25 September 2005 - but now I have a picture!

"Benevolence" comes from the Latin root "bene" for "good," and "volente," for "will." To be benevolent is to have a "good will." "Benevolence," means - "A kindly act;" or, a "gift given out of generosity" (as defined by The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition Copyright © 2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company).

As much as is in him, the Militant Pacifist is a benevolent personage. As much as is in him, the Militant Pacifist "loves" the sons and daughters of men in general. With this tentative love in mind - this Louisiana boy (the Militant Pacifist) reveals to you a secret. This is a valuable secret - and the Militant Pacifist has no inkling of how long this effusion of "good will" will last - so you had better copy fast - or maybe you had better click 'print'. This recipe is from an old New Orleans restaurant - I can say no more than that, as I must protect covert sources and the Militant Pacifist!

If you have noticed, the fact that shrimp even exist - is evidence of the general beneficence of Almighty God to the sons of men in general. Each shrimp = one bite! How does this happen? It happens in the gracious providence of a loving God!

Now, for the candy - and if you want this - you had better get it now. It could be taken down by evil powers. I share it with you, only because of "benevolence."

Bar-B-Que Shrimp (and this is not "barbeque" in the Memphis or Texas style) - this is the Epicurean cuisine of pure Sodom (New Orleans) - and it is "good, good, good!"

Recipe:

3# Shrimp (large, or the biggest you can find on sale) - save your big $ for the best red vino you can splurge on!

1/2# salted butter - cut into 1/4" slices.

1/2 Cup good oil (extra virgin Italian olive oil is preferred) - this dish is "extra," and it is "virginal!"

1 Tablespoon dried parsley leaves.

1 Teaspoon Dried Oregano leaves.

3 Pods of Fresh Garlic, crushed or finely chopped.

2 Lemons (or limes), thinly sliced.

2 Tablespoons sea salt.

3 Tablespoons coarsely cracked black Malabar pepper.

2 Tablespoons Lea & Perrin (if you don't know what this is - please exit now - you are in way over your head).

Put a layer of shrimp in a 9 x 13" or larger pan.

Sprinkle 1/2 of the seasoning mixture and salt over the shrimp.

Distribute 1/2 of the lemon slices, butter chunks (or slices) and oil over the shrimp.

Add 1/2 of the Lea & Perrin, salt, garlic, etc.

Add a 2nd layer of shrimp, and the remaining spices, salt, butter, oil, etc.

Place the pan in a 400 degree (F) oven for 10 minutes.

Remove the pan and turn, stir and thoroughly mix the shrimp and spices.

Cook for 10-15 more minutes - or until shrimp are orange, even slightly browned on top (DO NOT OVERCOOK!)

Serve this dish with the best red wine you can afford (Zinfandel, or Cab is recommended), with good fresh crusty French bread (this is to be dipped in the sop, "the sauce" with friends), and with a fine Caesar Salad (if you can make your own dressing - even better!).

I'm not sure it gets much better than this friends! I think that this is what they are eating in the outer courts of heaven.

This dish is best enjoyed with beloved friends, good wine, and delta blues playing on the stereo (Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, B.B. King, or even T-Bone Walker would be great).

I give you this because of benevolence - because of a "good will." But my desire is that you not only feast on the bounty of providence in time - but in eternity. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Himself feed you the bread and wine of his flesh and blood - for this is life indeed!

Those of you who watched (with dismay) the drama of Dr. Beckwith being denied tenure by Baylor University will be saddened to learn that he has abandoned the faith to embrace what the reformers considered "the great whore."

If you are a lover of thinkers and a lover of souls, pray for this poor man. It is obvious that he is in the clutches of the deceiver. You can read his statement by clicking on the posting title above.

Migraines

About 4 years ago, the Militant Pacifist awoke in the middle of the night with the most incredibly pounding headache he had ever experienced. The pain was so overwhelming and overpowering that nausea and “dry heaves” set in. As the Militant Pacifist sat wretching on the edge of his bed, his beloved bride (an advanced practice medical professional) awoke saying “what’s wrong baby, what’s wrong?”

The Militant Pacifist replied – “I don’t know darling – I don’t know – I think I’m dying. I love you baby – I love you.” But – that was not the end. A diagnosis of “migraine headaches” followed.

Turns out – there is a maternal family history. If you don’t know, migraine headaches are horrible. Generally, they are “triggered” by something. Neurologists recommend that sufferers keep a journal of activities, foods, mood-states, etc. when a migraine begins in hope of identifying the “trigger” so that future “triggering” can be avoided.

The Militant Pacifist’s major trigger seems to be atmospheric pressure. Hence, when storms roll in – headaches are on board.

Such headaches are depressing. They can last for days – even more than a week – with only intermittent relief. The persistent pain can cause exhaustion, distress, an inability to maintain focus on work, and even depression. Medications are available, but it seems that sometimes they work – and sometimes they don’t, and their side effects are unpleasant.

Why Lord, why?

Because – comes the answer – because “my grace is sufficient for thee,” and “my strength is made perfect in weakness (II Corinthians 12:9).”

Yes Master. Please give me more grace.

Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (an Existential Quote)

The Militant Pacifist has recently been surveying the 20th century philosopher Ludwug Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Wittgenstein caused quite a stir by "kicking-off" the serious linguistic analysis craze of the 20th century, and the notable "Vienna Circle" movement whose philosophy ultimately proved to be "self-refuting."

Wittgenstein is generally NOT associated with the existential movement of the 20th century (a movement to which the Militant Pacifist has a perverse attraction), however, the following “existential” quotation from Wittgenstein's "Tractatus," 6.43, seems weighty indeed. Ponder this:

"The world of the happy man is a different one from that of the unhappy man."

God Has No Cause

A few words from Soren Kierkegaard (you can click on the posting title above):

There are those who talk about God's cause, and about wanting to serve that cause. This is all very fine, but how, exactly, is this to be interpreted? The common view thinks that God has a cause in the human sense of the word, that he is some kind of advocate, interested in having his cause win and therefore eager to help the person who would serve his cause, and so forth. If we follow this line of thinking God becomes a minor character who arrives at the embarrassing dilemma of needing human beings.

No, no! God has no cause, is no advocate in this sense. For God everything is infinitely nothing. Any second he wills it, everything, including all opposition to his cause, becomes nothing. Wanting to serve God's cause can never mean the same thing as coming to his aid. No, to serve God's cause is to face examination. If someone wants to serve his cause, it is not God who loses his balance and sublimity; no, he fixes his attention upon this volunteer - observantly - and sees how he conducts himself, whether he has integrity and resolve. Because God is not interested in temporal causes, because he is infinitely the conquering Lord, precisely for that reason he examines. He is quite able to accomplish his will alone.

This is why the more one is involved with God the more rigorous everything becomes. It is out of God's infinite love that he involves himself with every human being. The very fact that God permits evil people to thrive in this world is a mark of his infinite majesty. Do you not understand this frightful punishment, that God overlooks them? God's punishment is upon those he chooses to have nothing more to do with. And yet he always accomplishes what he wills.

We usually think that when we honestly want to serve God's cause, God will also help us along. Well, how? In a material way? By a successful outcome, prosperity, earthly advantage, or the like? But in that case everything gets turned around and it no longer remains God's cause but a finite endeavor. Besides, maybe I am only a cunning fellow, who really does not want to serve God but in a deceptive, pious way to cheat God to my advantage.

Perhaps I even think that God is in a bind and is made happy as soon as someone volunteers to serve his cause. Utter nonsense and blasphemy! No, God is spirit - and our task is to be transformed into spirit. But spirit is absolutely opposed to being related to God by way of temporal benefits. Such is God's sublimity - and yet this is the infinite love of God!

Yes, infinite love, so infinite that God desires to involve himself with every human being, with every weak, foolish, carnal heart who tries to make him into a nice uncle, a really fine grandfather whom we can make good use of.

God is infinite love and for this reason has no cause. He will not suddenly overpower a person and demand that he instantly become spirit. If that were the case we would all perish. No, he handles each person gently. His is a long operation, an upbringing in love. Yes, there are times when one gasps and God strengthens with material blessings. But there is one thing God requires unconditionally at every moment - integrity - that one does not reverse the relationship and try to prove his relationship to God or the truth of his cause by good fortune, prosperity, and the like. God wants us to understand that material blessings are a concession to our weakness and very likely something he will withdraw at some later date to help us make true progress, not in some finite endeavor but in passing the examination.

Are you okay friend?

Grief – "No", disappointment – "No", disgust – well, I’m not really sure. The Militant Pacifist’s new job puts him on the road early in the AM – and this means – that if he wants to – he can listen to “Focus on the Family (FoF).”

Not really “cool,” but the Militant Pacifist has benefited greatly from the books of Dr. James Dobson – books like “Love Must Be Tough,” “Bringing up Boys,” and “What Wives Wish their Husbands knew about Women.” The man has wisdom and skill with words, and his words and writing have been a blessing to many Christians.

My (grief, disappointment, disgust) emotion was over what I heard – on the radio program (words of caution, words of warning, words of fear). This week is “election” week in America. In the USA this week, we enter into the holy of holies and exercise our sacred (gag) right-to-vote. Dr. Dobson is greatly concerned about the future of America.

We are at a cross-road – the time is critical – before us are life and death – evil and good – right and wrong – democrats and republicans. If you are a good (FoF) Christian – you will make the right choice – you will be one of “Nehemiah’s re-builders” – you will be one of the saviors of America.

All of this makes me feel sick (nauseous). This is a righteous man – but he has totally bought in to the myth of “Christian” America.

The Militant Pacifist believes differently. The Militant Pacifist believes that either America = Sodom, or America approximates Sodom. God will judge America. God has judged America. God is judging America. Anyone who places hope or confidence in America is destined to a life of fear, depression, despondency and confusion. God will not bless America – that is over!

The blood is not coming – the blood is already in the streets. The foolish will look to men for help – but there is no help in man.

The republican is the devil. The democrat is Mephistopheles. America is the bastard son of the enlightenment. The corrupted (little “r”) reason of man must bow to the (capital “R”) reason (λογος) of God. It always has, and it always will. The truth is hard – but it never changes. Politicians are (all) liars. Don’t hold that against them – it is their job.

We do not need a new politician. We do not need a different politician. We need a king!

The Militant Pacifist has a king, and the Militant Pacifist is at peace.

Dear, beloved Dr. Dobson - are we on the same page? After Tuesday night (election night), where will your God (god?) be? My God will be firmly upon His throne! Μy mind will be at peace. Put no confidence in princes (especially republicans), nor for help on man depend, he shall die, to dust returning – and his purposes shall end.

Come Up Now!

Many of us have been struck by what must be the meaning of the Savior’s words “the kingdom of God is within you. (Luke 17:21).” The words may seem cryptic, but when combined with other statements of the King (e.g., “My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence” (John 18:36)) they must be understood as a refutation of any proposed establishment of a physical kingdom upon the face of a world cursed by Almighty God.

How then are we to understand this kingdom that came with the Christ? This kingdom that was “at hand” over 2000 years ago – this kingdom that Jesus affirmed had come when he said “if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you (Luke 11:20).”

It must be something different. It must be something other than the normal “kingdom” that we as men expect to see. The normal kingdom of this world does send its servants to fight when its king is threatened.

What if Jesus meant what He said when He said, “the kingdom of God is within you?” What if the kingdom of God (that kingdom which the saints of God enter when they swear allegiance to its King) is an invisible, ethereal, other-worldly, mystical kingdom that only those who have entered can understand?

The Militant Pacifist asserts that indeed, this is the case. The kingdom of God is not seen with the physical eyes of men. It is not merely trans-national, it is supra-national.

The Christian is to be so concerned with this kingdom and allegiance to the true King, that all other allegiances pale in comparison.

So when the question is asked – “where is your citizenship?” – the Christian should reply with the Apostle Paul – “our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20 NKJV).”

Friend – the kingdom has come! Bow to King Jesus! Don’t wait for heaven – enjoy His peaceful reign NOW!

Lawbreaker!!!

For the Christian, (the Militant Pacifist claims the status "Christian") there is but one ultimate authority – and this is Jesus Christ (God). The kingdom of Christ is a monarchy, and Jesus Christ reigns as King over all who have been made citizens of His kingdom. Hence, all Christians are obliged to obey their King. Any assertion to the contrary is rebellion.

In His absolute invisible and creatorial sovereignty, Jesus Christ reigns as King of kings, and Lord of lords. For the Christian, all worldly authorities are inferior to King Jesus. There can be no other King (authority) before Him.

King Jesus teaches that His kingdom is not “of this world.” Hence, consistent obedience to King Jesus immediately brings to the fore the conflicting demands of “worldly” authorities.

Since for the Christian, there is but one ultimate authority – the demands or commands of lesser authorities must ever be evaluated in light of the greater. Following any such evaluation, the Christian must always grant precedence to the greater.

Hence, it is expected that the Christian will be a worldly law-breaker.

BOOK REVIEW - The Next Reformation: Why Evangelicals Must Embrace Postmodernity

Review / Critique:

If you are a Christian interested in philosophy (as the Militant Pacifist is), and if you have become convinced (as the Militant Pacifist has) that 21st century evangelical Christianity is thoroughly Hellenized, then you should find this book interesting.

This is a mostly "academic" work (i.e., it is not “light” reading), but even if you have not read much philosophy you can wade through it if you keep a philosophical dictionary close by.


Strengths:

(1) Raschke has a Ph.D. from Harvard University, and his analysis of the history of Western Philosophy (and its impact upon Christian thought) is very well-argued. The Militant Pacifist has been disillusioned with many recent Christian writers who seek to criticize “Postmodernism” without really understanding it (i.e., they have read none of the primary texts – and react with a fundamentalist zeal – full of fire, but without knowledge). This is easily understandable – since reading Jacques Derrida is almost as relaxing as a root canal. But the “Christian bookstore” definition that “postmodernism=relativism,” is simply un-scholarly. Raschke has read Derrida, Foucault, Levinas, et. al. (where was Lyotard?), and does not fall into to the “simplification” error of many recent popular Christian writers.

(2) Raschke recognizes that the modernistic quest for “certainty,” is a Western idea with philosophical roots in the foundationalist thought of Descarte. For an easier to read analysis of this issue read Lesslie Newbigin’s, Proper Confidence: Faith, Doubt, and Certainty in Christian Discipleship, (this is a great little book, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0802808565/sr=1-1/qid=1145588003/ref=sr_1_1/002-4823991-7848833?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books). Raschke pummels this idea relentlessly using Derrida as the hammer (and Derrida is a great hammer!). Christianity is not about “certainty,” (the perpetual quest of Western Philosophy), it is much more existential – it’s about faith.

Weaknesses:

(1) Raschke disparages “propositional truth.” He analyses and quotes the theologian Cornelius Van Til extensively, while neglecting the greater 20th century Philosopher Gordon H. Clark. Raschke scathingly critiques Francis Schaeffer, while embracing the irrationalism of Kierkegaard (Kierkegaard is an interesting writer, but he wasn't a Philosopher – and he never claimed to be - he repeatedly said "I'm a writer"). In the Militant Pacifist’s opinion, to criticize “propositional truth,” is to beat one's head against a stone wall (i.e., it is an unrewarding and painful activity which makes the “criticizer” look foolish). Contrary to John Armstrong’s recent ramblings (see his BLOG, http://johnharmstrong.typepad.com/john_h_armstrong_/2006/03/how_important_i.html), propositional truth is not at risk at all - and "propositional truth" is not "hard to understand." Propositional truth will be standing long after its critics have returned to dust and ashes. Not only are propositions NOT hard to understand (contrary to what Armstrong says), the Holy Bible (the Word of God) is written in propositions; predications. When Raschke embraces irrationalism, he slips, he slides – he looses ground (grounding, credibility). Raschke is extremely intelligent, so the reader must understand that his embrace of irrationalism is not accidental; his sustained attack on foundationalism (and his method of attack) traps him in irrationalism.

(2) Raschke embraces Charismatic foolishness. This is the hardest to swallow. In the next to last chapter of the book, this Harvard Ph.D. documents how (emotionally weakened by a failed marriage) he experiences a charismatic phenomena in a Dallas, Texas meeting, and is forevermore changed into what Brian Maclaren calls “a new kind of Christian.” For the orthodox thinking Christian who has experienced Christ as the "wisdom of God" – this leap into irrationality/foolishness is astounding. Wake up man – you are better than this!

Conclusion:

This is a very interesting book. It is generally well written, and if I could delete about 20 pages (out of 215) I would give it 5 stars. As it is, I will give it only 3. I can only recommend it for thinking Christians who are attracted to Postmodernism (as the Militant Pacifist is). It is educational and well written, and may serve as a warning of the foolishness that can follow when one embraces irrationalism and calls it “Christian.”

On Reading Philosophy – An Emotional Rant

The Militant Pacifist is convinced that the Christian life is essentially a life of the mind. I am my mind and my mind is me. [As a Christian, in the “intermediate heaven” (i.e., before the resurrection of the body), I will exist as “pure” mind – I will “think” apart from a brain!]

If this is the case (and the Militant Pacifist asserts that it is), then one of the most noble tasks a human can engage in is that of “thinking.” Christians should be thinkers! The Militant Pacifist must be careful here, lest he stray into the enemy territory of despising non-thinkers (a constant temptation).

If you buy the Militant Pacifist’s argument so far (everything is an argument), then you will probably agree with the Militant Pacifist that – to think deeply is a highly desirable activity. Hence, you may be attracted to that scientia of thinkers - “Philosophy!” Such an attraction is pathologic; it is disease!

The Militant Pacifist suffers from the disease. Hence, while beloved friends are enjoying the latest Grisham novel, the Militant Pacifist is suffering with Derrida, or wrestling with Heidegger, or struggling with Kristeva, or contemplating Kant, or rejoicing with Clark. [I need to hurry up so I can get to that Grisham novel!]

An interesting feature of the disease is that it has caused the Militant Pacifist to become convinced that most Philosophers are fools! Maybe this should be an obvious feature of the Militant Pacifist’s thought as he claims the moniker “Christian.”

“For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. (1 Corinthians 1:19-21).”

But beyond this obvious Christian predisposition, the Militant Pacifist has become convinced that most Philosophers are idiots. At the time of this writing, the Militant Pacifist is struggling through Martin Heidegger’s Introduction to Metaphysics. Though there are many deep and interesting ideas (and the Militant Pacifist realizes that this is a “work in translation”), there are many points at which the work “might as well be written in Sanskrit!”

Unless your idea of “a life,” is to write something in such unreadable terms that only the select few initiates can understand it, then why would you write in such a way that only .01% of readers can understand what you are saying? If you have something to say that is not total bulls**t, then – why not SAY IT clearly. [Random thought: Maybe the goal of some writers is merely to sell books to Philosophy students.]

The Militant Pacifist admires good writing. [As a Militant Pacifist, I am open to many criticisms – but not being “well-read” is not one of them.] If the Militant Pacifist, as an educated reader, has to read your page four or five times - and then is not sure that he got your point – then friend, the Militant Pacifist will not accept the blame. The problem is this – your writing sucks! You are writing for some object other than to clearly communicate your ideas.

As one who has been around for a few years – the Militant Pacifist has come to believe that – if your ideas are not readily communicable to an educated person, then your ideas are most likely bulls**t (see On Bulls**t, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0691122946/qid=1142476882/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-6943106-9427114?s=books&v=glance&n=283155)

If you are one who strives to deal in the realm of ideas (and are not just a “poser”), then by all means – write clearly and succinctly. As the great mind Gordon H. Clark taught – if you can’t explain what you mean (define your terms), then you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The Religion of the State

Death Penalty – For, or Against?

As far back as the Militant Pacifist can remember, he has supported the “death penalty.” As he considers his thought, the Militant Pacifist has (in his "memorable memory") always supposed that the “death penalty” was the appropriate penalty in cases where what was taken could not be “restituted” (e.g., murder and rape). The recent high-profile execution of Crips founder Stanley “Tookie” Williams demands that the Militant Pacifist reconsider his position.

Previously, as he has pondered the death penalty, the Militant Pacifist has always approached the matter in a philosophically idealistic manner (i.e., he has assumed a righteous state mandating punitive action against an evil law-breaker).

But the Militant Pacifist exists “existentially” in the “real world!”

What if reality is not “philosophically idealistic” at all? What if the state under consideration is a kind of modern “Sodom?” What if the state under consideration has sanctioned (and continues to sanction) the killing of millions of innocents? What if the state under consideration has sent its citizens on foreign military adventures in which thousands (perhaps millions) of human lives have been squandered under such pretexts such as “saving the world from communism,” or “defending our freedom” or “fighting a war on drugs,” or “fighting a war against terrorism?” What if the state under consideration has stolen (at gun-point) the hard-earned money of its citizens to do immoral, unwise, and wicked things? What if, rather than a “philosophically idealistic” state, the state that is to administer the “death penalty” is the wretched, sodom-like state described in the sentences above? What if the state under consideration is wicked, wicked, wicked.

Should the Militant Pacifist existentially “support” the death penalty when it is to be administered by such an immoral entity?

The Militant Pacifist confesses to a philosophical quandary – but he is leaning towards “carte-blanche” opposition to the death penalty in the United States of America (i.e., 21st century Sodom) - though he may maintain a theoretical (logical) support for the notion (the Militant Pacifist acknowledges that the "argument" above is not a logical but an emotional argument).

On the Virtues of a Sharpened Axe

The Militant Pacifist stayed home today. The icy roads in the DFW metroplex resulted in a 2.5 hour commute home yesterday evening (past many ditched SUVs), so wisdom prevailed and the Militant Pacifist "worked from home."

In the afternoon, the Militant Pacifist retreived his axe "blondie," for a little personal interaction (its been sooo long baby). What a joy! How did I ever let this slide? There's definitely something other-wordly about a sleek axe, a cranked amp, and blues licks!

Bad Influence

The Militant Pacifist needs to curb his enthusiasm for pointing out the obivious (i.e., the severe case of LIS* suffered by the current el presidente of the United States of America). The Militant Pacifist realized this recently when he came across the following essay - written by the Militant Pacifist's daughter to fulfill a requirement of her English Grammar class.

My family likes freedom but not George Bush. Mostly my daddy
doesn't like him. Daddy is happy that we are free to worship as we please
but Mr. Bush and him don't get along. He prays for Mr. Bush since the
bible says that we should pray for the people in power over us and for our
enemies. One reason that my daddy doesn't like George Bush is that he
started an unnecessary war. George Bush's men killed dozens of people and
thousands of military men were killed in the process. Here's my
conclusion, my daddy does not like George Bush!

The Militant Pacifist receives periodic criticism for linking to other articles / rants rather than writing his own (if you are one of those who have offered this criticism – thank you for visiting my blog!). In his defense, the Militant Pacifist must say that he has very limited “blogging” time, and he believes (in general) that others do a better job.

That said, here goes…

The epistemological quandary raised when one embraces a doctrine of total human fallen-ness (depravity) is monumental. The noetic effects of the fall are rarely discussed and clearly underappreciated by the mass of professing Christians (even by those who claim the moniker “reformed”).

Clearly, the laws of logic are unaffected by the fall. The laws of contradiction, identity, and excluded middle exist above and apart from humanity and reflect the very working of the mind of God.

Though logic is uncompromised, the ability of humanity to think (reason) properly has been thoroughly compromised by the fall.

The corruption of the fall has so damaged and defaced humanity that it is now considered “natural” that men die (after all, isn’t that the course of nature). This physical consequence of the fall (death) is amplified in the unseen dimension of human consciousness, perception and reason. These human faculties are now fundamentally unsound (partially dead) because of the taint of original sin.

Either Descartes did not understand this, or he did not believe it. Not understanding / believing it, he had confidence in the soundness of his own ability to properly reason. He never realized he was performing metaphysical surgery with tainted (fallen) instruments. Therefore, from the Christian perspective, cogito ergo sum is extremely suspect (as is the entirety of the Enlightenment project).

If your mind is corrupt (fallen) because of the fall – where are you left? Use your fallen mind and think! You are left in a state of extreme uncertainty. You are left wondering – what is real? Am I thinking rightly (even now)? If I can’t trust my own mind, what can I trust? Do those I respect and love really have a grasp of truth? What is truth anyway? Why is it that? I’ve only been here a few years – and I’m on my way out now – how can I figure this all out?

How depressing! How disconcerting! Is there any solution to all of this?

The Christian affirmation is that there is. There is a solution! The solution is found in the Christian doctrine of Divine Revelation. The Christian doctrine of Divine Revelation teaches that God Himself has revealed truth to men in the very person of His Son. Via the incarnation God Himself has entered the human sphere - a sphere filled with fallen creatures – and because He is the maker of humans He has communicated propositions understandable (even in their fallen-ness) to them.

His word (λογος) to men, is His son - Jesus Christ – and everyone that God reveals Him to can understand this Word.

Bow before him!

All wise men (except the God-man) were once not (wise). It is a great mercy of Almighty God that He enables proud men to change their minds - but consequences always follow. Dostoevsky Didn't Say It

The best novel that The Militant Pacifist has ever read (bar none) is the existential masterpiece The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Mikhail Dostoevsky. If you've never read this book, The Militant Pacifist recommends that you get it and move it to the top of your stack!

The Militant Pacifist is such a fan of the work that as a part of his graduate studies he read The Grand Inquisitor (a novella/poem within The Brothers Karamazov) through the philosophical lenses of various philosopher's and rhetoricians (e.g., Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva, Martin Heidegger, Jacques Derrida, Paul DeMann) and wrote analytical essays on the various readings.

The Militant Pacifist is well aware of the quotation frequently attributed to Doestoevsky's novel - "If there is no God, all is permitted."

Having read the novel deeply, the Militant Pacifist was motivated to locate such a lively quotation - but alas - even with hours and hours of pouring over the text in search of the quotation, The Militant Pacifist was never able to locate it in Constance Garnett's English text (and unfortunately, The Militant Pacifist cannot read Russian).

Certainly, the idea contained in the quotation is found in the novel - but the precise source of the quotation remains elusive. How interesting then (to The Militant Pacifist) to find that someone else on the planet has experienced this difficulty.

Under the Mercy

One of the Militant Pacifist’s friends always concludes his e-mails with the phrase “under the mercy.” As the Militant Pacifist contemplated this recently, he was reminded of how wonderful the mercy of God is - and how blessed is the person who can in truth write "under the mercy."

Disproving the State: Four Arguments Against Government

The Militant Pacifist recommends that you check out the essay linked in the title of this posting.

Since the Militant Pacifist believes in the Christian doctrine of human fallen-ness, he cannot imagine a logically sound argument in support of humanly instituted government. Why (in the light of logic) should one depraved man submit or yield to another? The Militant Pacifist cannot determine any reason why, except that one of the depraved men has a sword in his hand! And that is not a good "reason." That is simply survival.

But then, the Militant Pacifist's thought has been swayed. He resides within a divine monarchy (a holy nation), a kingdom definitely not "of this world."

War Pigs

As the Militant Pacifist contemplated (during a recent daily commute) the massive destruction and bloodshed of the imperialist wars launched by United States government in the 20th and 21st centuries, the strains of an old rock-n-roll song entered his ears. The lyrics to Black Sabbath's War Pigs are reproduced below.


Generals gathered in their masses,

Thinking About Harriet Miers

The Militant Pacifist is aware that most folks do not like to think. To really think requires effort. It requires self-criticism. It requires one to admit that his or her opinion may be very, very wrong. To really think, one must acknowledge presuppositions and become epistemologically self-conscious. It is at this point that one often sees that the emperor has no clothes. This can quickly become a personally unpleasant state of affairs.

Much better not to think. Take it easy. Stay with the status quo. Believe the lies. Just drink the Kool-Aid.

But, if you would like to think - then think about the looming disaster that is the Harriet Miers Supreme Court judicial nomination (click on the posting title above to the linked article).

But then, The Militant Pacifist should remind the readers (are there any?) that it is vain to hope in human judges.

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes (Psalm 118:8-9). (See my 14 September 2005 post).

Put no confidence in princes, nor for help on man depend - he shall die, to dust returning, and his purposes shall end.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God (Psalm 43:5).

Nobody ever eats crow willingly. They have to be "force-fed" it. Oh, for a real liberty-lover to vote for! Oh, for a politician that would leave me, my family and my money alone. Statism stinks!

A Theistic Argument (against naturalism) from Evil

The Militant Pacifist sees “Naturalism” as the primary enemy of Christian thought in modernity (or post-modernity, wherever it is that we are).

The so called “Problem of Evil” is thought by many pagan philosophers and naturalistic thinkers to mitigate the existence of the Christian God. In his essay “A Christian Life Partly Lived” (from the essay collection Philosophers Who Believe: The Spiritual Journeys of 11 Leading Thinkers - see link in the posting title above), the renowned philosopher (and Christian) Alvin Plantinga argues for the reality of a powerful “Theistic Argument from Evil (pages 72-73).”

“ ...there is a theistic argument from evil, and it is at least as strong as the antitheistic argument from evil. (Here I can only sketch the argument and leave it at an intuitive level.) What is so deeply disturbing about horrifying kinds of evil? The most appalling kinds of evil involve human cruelty and wickedness: Stalin and Pol Pot, Hitler and his henchmen, and the thousands of small vignettes of evil that make up such a whole. What is genuinely abhorrent is the callousness and perversion and cruelty of the concentration camp guard taking pleasure in the sufferings of others; what is really odious is taking advantage of one’s position of trust (as a parent or counselor, perhaps) in order to betray and corrupt someone. What is genuinely appalling, in other words, is not really human suffering as such so much as human wickedness. This wickedness strikes us as deeply perverse, wholly wrong, warranting not just quarantine and the attempt to overcome it, but blame and punishment.

But could there really be any such thing as horrifying wickedness if naturalism were true? I don’t see how. A naturalistic way of looking at the world, so it seems to me, has no place for genuine moral obligation of any sort; a fortiori, then, it has no place for such a category as horrifying wickedness. It is hard enough, from a naturalistic perspective, to see how it could be that we human beings can be so related to propositions (contents) that we believe them; and harder yet, as I said above, to explain how that content could enter into a causal explanation of someone’s actions. But these difficulties are nothing compared with seeing how, in a naturalistic universe, there could be such a thing as genuine and appalling wickedness. There can be such a thing only if there is a way rational creatures are supposed to live, obliged to live; and the force of that normativity – its strength, so to speak – is such that the appalling and horrifying nature of genuine wickedness is its inverse. But naturalism cannot make room for that kind of normativity; that requires a divine lawgiver, one whose very nature it is to abhor wickedness. Naturalism can perhaps accommodate foolishness and irrationality, acting contrary to what are or what you take to be your own interests; it can’t accommodate appalling wickedness. Accordingly, if you think there really is such a thing as horrifying wickedness (that our sense that there is, is not a mere illusion of some sort), and if you also think the main options are theism and naturalism, then you have a powerful theistic argument from evil.”

The Militant Pacifist summarizes – naturalists who believe in the existence of evil are intellectually inconsistent, i.e., they are irrational idiots.

Your perception of evil is a powerful testimony to the existence of the God who made you!

If you believe in evil, but not in God, then you should look into this inconsistency immediately!!!

So you think your mind is sound!

Mind - the element or complex of elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons (Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary, © 2002 Merriam-Webster, Inc.).

Sound - free from defect, decay, or damage; in good condition (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, © 2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company.)

The Christian scriptures teach that God made man upright (the original “state of nature”), but that our proto-typical parents “fell” into sin which resulted in spiritual death passing upon all of their natural descendents (a most un-natural situation). Christianity teaches that the only remedy for this dire situation is a spiritual resurrection in which the spiritually-dead person is raised to new life by God in Jesus Christ.

Not only did this “fall” result in the condemnation of an entire race of created beings, it also damaged the creature’s bodies and even their immaterial minds. Following this fall, the creatures became subject to errors in reasoning, and they began to die physically as they received the “wages” (the payment) for their sins.

“For the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).”

Christianity teaches that after this fall, the minds of the fallen creatures actually became hostile against the Creator.

“The carnal mind is enmity against God (Romans 8:7).”

Therefore what was originally natural (a love towards God) has now (in the fallen state) become un-natural. The scriptures teach that NOW, by nature, humans are enemies of God. Their minds are generally in a state of hostility against Him (God).

Post-fall human minds are “un-sound,” and therefore, they are prone to moral evil, and faulty reasoning.

The laws of thought (logic / λογος) were totally unaffected by the creaturely fall; however, the ability of an un-sound mind to reason according to divine laws has been massively compromised.

The Militant Pacifist recommends that you think. The Militant Pacifist recommends that you think deeply. But the Militant Pacifist warns you that when you have finished thinking – you should remember that your mind is not totally sound. Therefore, you must do the very best that you can to try and align your thoughts with the thoughts of God (a lot of these thoughts are recorded in the Holy Bible).

Only when your thoughts are aligned with the thoughts of God can you be confident that your thoughts are sound. All glory to the Λογος!

If there is anything that gripes the Militant Pacifist more than statist aggression, it is state-mandated slavery; however, the Militant Pacifist pays income taxes. A Nobel Laureate Speaks

Receiving the Nobel prize for literature doesn't make you a genius, but it's bound to get some of your quotes published. Harold Pinter, British playwright and poet, is the 2005 Nobel Laureate for Literature. The following comment is from his House of Commons Speech given on Tuesday, January 21, 2003.

"One of the more nauseating images of the year 2002 is that of our Prime Minister kneeling in the church on Christmas Day praying for peace on earth and good will towards all men while simultaneously preparing to assist in the murder of thousands of totally innocent people in Iraq.
I've been taken to task recently by the American Ambassador to Britain for calling the US Administration a blood thirsty wild animal. All I can say is: take a look at Donald Rumsfeld's face and the case is made.

I believe that not only is this contemplated act criminal, malevolent and barbaric, it also contains within itself a palpable joy in destruction. Power, as has often been remarked, is the great aphrodisiac, and so, it would seem, is the death of others.

The Americans have the ostensible support of the "international community" through various sure-fire modes of intimidation; bullying, bribery, blackmail and bullshit. The "international community" becomes a degraded entity bludgeoned into the service of a brutal military force out of control. The most despicable position is that of course of this country which pretends to stand shoulder to shoulder with its great ally while in fact being more of a whipped dog than anyone else. We are demeaned, undermined and dishonoured by our government's contemptible subservience to the United States.

The planned war can only bring about the collapse of what remains of the Iraqi infrastructure, widespread death, mutilation and disease, an estimated one million refugees and escalation of violence throughout the world, but it will still masquerade as a "moral crusade," a "just war," a war waged by "freedom loving democracies," to bring "democracy" to Iraq.
The stink of the hypocrisy is suffocating.

This is in reality a simple tale of invasion of sovereign territory, military occupation and control of oil.

We have a clear obligation, which is to resist."

Interests? Whose Interests?

Most people refuse to think deeply. Hence, they buy into the idea that they have “interests” which are not truly their interests at all.

Since the glory days of the Roman Empire (and before) nation-states have sent their sons to die on foreign shores because they had “interests” there. Supposedly, the United States has “interests” everywhere. Historically, honorable Americans were expected to be willing to fight and (if necessary) die for liberty. Today, they are expected to be willing to fight and die for “interests.”

Government officials speak of “national interests.” Some speak of “vital interests,” some of “strategic interests,” and some just mention “interests.” The United States Constitution nowhere speaks of interests, but history teaches us that the Roman Senate empowered the Emperor Vespasian with the “right...to do whatever he deems to serve the interests of the state.” But are the interests of the state your interests - especially if you are a Christian?

As published elsewhere in this BLOG, the Militant Pacifist is “anti-statist.” As a Christian, the Militant Pacifist feels only an exceedingly secondary allegiance to the worldly state into which he was "thrown" (in the Heideggerian sense). As a thinking person, the Militant Pacifist has conquered the bulk of his feelings of nationalism (a disgraceful emotion for professing Christians). As a (conditional) pacifist, the Militant Pacifist abhors the use of the statist sword to advance, protect, and enforce something as fickle and ill-defined as “interests.”

What a tragedy that in the 20th century the impious US government bathed its sword with the blood of its own sons to advance its “interests” (a grievous national sin which has accelerated in these opening days of the 21st century).

Though the Militant Pacifist believes the late American Republic to be the greatest experiment in modern governmental method, he sees it destined for continued horrific judgment because of a relativistic ethic which rationalizes the taking of human life under the guise of “interests.” Such a wicked, wicked concept cries out for Divine judgment.

Dear reader – do not be deceived! The Christian's great interest is in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - and His kingdom. All of the kingdoms of this world will fall!

“The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God (Psalm 9:17).”
